Anti-Muslim Hate — How Should Muslims Respond?

The growing popularity of far-right movements and parties such as Nigel Farage’s Reform UK and Tommy Robinson’s Unite the Kingdom, has caused concern among many Muslims, as Muslims and immigration are increasingly blamed for many of Britain’s social and economic problems.

Today, anti-immigration and anti-Muslim narratives have become far more mainstream.

Even established political parties have adopted tougher language on immigration, identity, and integration in an attempt to win votes. This has contributed to a wider climate in which Islam and Muslims are increasingly viewed with suspicion.

Muslims have been part of Britain for generations. Muslims have contributed positively to society as doctors, teachers, business owners, lawyers, charity workers, politicians, and neighbours. Despite this, hostility towards Islam and Muslims continues to grow.

Why Has The Climate Become More Difficult for Muslims?

Many Muslims — especially young Muslims — are becoming more confident in openly practising and identifying with Islam. At the same time, wider society is experiencing an identity crisis of its own, with growing fears around immigration, cultural change, and national identity.

Some on the far-right portray visible Islamic values and Muslim identity as a threat to “British culture.” As a result, Muslims are often pressured to dilute their beliefs and integrate in ways that conflict with their faith and values.

However, being Muslim and contributing positively to society are not contradictions. Islam teaches Muslims to be a benefit to the community they live in, by living according to Islamic values and principles.

How Should Muslims Respond To The Rising Anti-Muslim Hate?

Muslims should respond with wisdom, confidence, patience, good character and by following Islam and upholding Islamic values — not anger, hatred, or isolation.

Rather than becoming defensive or withdrawing from society, Muslims should become ambassadors for Islam by explaining its teachings through both words and actions.

Islam is not simply a private faith. It is guidance from Allah (swt) for all of humanity — a complete way of life that teaches people how to live morally, spiritually, socially, economically and politically.

In times of hostility and division, Muslims should hold firmly to Islamic principles and represent Islam in the best way possible.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“The best of people are those most beneficial to people.” — Al-Tabarani (Hasan)

Muslims should contribute positively to society by:

•⁠ ⁠Helping neighbours
•⁠ ⁠Supporting the vulnerable
•⁠ ⁠Being honest and trustworthy
•⁠ ⁠Serving local communities
•⁠ ⁠Standing for justice and compassion

A Muslim should be a source of benefit to all people.

Should Muslims Speak Out Against Wrongdoing Even If It Causes Hostility

Islam teaches Muslims not to remain silent in the face of injustice, hatred, or corruption.

Allah (swt) says:

“Let there arise from you a group inviting to all that is good, enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong.” — Surah Aal ‘Imran (3:104)

Muslims should speak with wisdom, dignity, and fairness — not through abuse or division.

Should Muslims Be Proud of Their Identity?

Muslims should not feel ashamed of Islam or hide their faith due to social pressure.

Allah says:

“And honour belongs to Allah, His Messenger, and the believers.” — Surah al-Munafiqun (63:8)

Islam gives Muslims dignity, purpose, and moral direction. A Muslim’s identity should not be shaped by social media, politics, or public opinion, but by the guidance of Allah (swt) and His Messenger ﷺ.

True Islamic teachings encourage:

•⁠ ⁠Honesty
•⁠ ⁠Responsibility
•⁠ ⁠Respect for people of other faiths
•⁠ ⁠Care for family and neighbours
•⁠ ⁠Justice and good conduct

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“The believer who mixes with people and is patient with their harm is better than the one who does not mix with people nor remain patient with their harm.” — Al-Tabarani (Hasan)

The stronger Muslims are in their Islam, the more they should benefit the society around them.

In times of rising hostility, Muslims must respond with faith, wisdom, patience, confidence, showing the best of Islam through their character and conduct.

Do Muslims Have A Future In Britain?

Muslims will continue to face challenges in Britain, including growing hostility towards Islam, pressure to compromise Islamic values, and increasing social and political tensions around identity and immigration. These realities should not be ignored.

At the same time, Muslims have been part of Britain for generations and continue to contribute positively to society in many different fields. Many Muslims are raising families, building communities, establishing mosques, charities, schools, and businesses, and trying to live according to Islam while benefiting wider society.

Some Muslims may choose to leave Britain and live elsewhere in search of a more Islamic environment. This is a personal decision and may be appropriate in certain circumstances. However, it is also important to recognise that no country today fully represents Islam in its entirety, and Muslims everywhere face different types of social, political, and moral challenges.

For many Muslims, remaining in Britain while holding firmly to Islam, raising strong Muslim families, and serving society with good character and confidence will remain an important responsibility. Muslims should not isolate themselves from society, nor should they lose their Islamic identity through pressure or fear.

The Prophet ﷺ and his companions lived as a minority in Makkah in a hostile environment with patience, wisdom, and principled conduct, while seeking support to establish their own Islamic authority – eventually successfully in Yathrib, modern day Medina. Muslims today should strive to follow that example — being ambassadors through honesty, compassion, justice and uncompromising on Islam.
